BreakAway One

“BreakAway One” Storms the Cardboard Derby

Are they a determined corps of elite winter athletes? Are they practicing for the luge in the 2010 Olympics? Or do they just have cabin fever?

It may be all three, but one thing is certain—they are a group of men who share a dream: to be victorious in their run for glory. These proud and determined men, with more spirit and will than the Jamaican Olympic Bobsled Team – have trained tirelessly—for days!—to bring honor to the BreakAway name. And so it was, on a bracing January afternoon that they rendezvoused with destiny at the annual Cardboard Derby.

Dan Mycka, Todd Brizzi, Adam Rexrode, Nick Herbert and Lou Bonbrest bravely piloted “BreakAway One” down the icy hills of nearby Ski Roundtop, in the wilds of the Pennsylvania mountains. The BreakAway One, nicknamed “One Shot” is sturdily built of Cardboard, 2+gallons of wood glue and 10+ rolls of Gorilla tape. Costumed by head costume designer Dan Mycka, our 5 Aliens were easy to spot in the crowd, inspiring awe in the young and instilling fear in their competitors. And off they went, as the last sunlight of the day waned into the dusky blues of evening, raging fiercely against the dying of the light, racing mightily and strong.

But fate had other plans: The BreakAway One, just inches from seizing Victory, slipped from its grasp, only to be bested by a giant Garfield sled. Though they fell just short of their ultimate dream, The BreakAway Crew – unlike Terrell Owens—did not weep over their defeat. And so they live to race another day, ever yearning for that victory which shall – yes, indeed it shall – be theirs.

The generation that grew up with Super Mario is entering the workplace, entering politics, so they see games as just another good tool to use to communicate.
