Dental Implant Training Simulation

This groundbreaking project, developed for the Medical College of Georgia and, funded through a grant by Nobel Biocare, was created to better teach and train dental school students and dental professionals patient assessment and diagnosis protocol and to practice dental implant procedures in a realistic, virtual, 3D, environment.

Objective:

Provide a PC, game-based simulation to improve dental student learning outcomes in the area of diagnostics, decision-making and treatment protocols for enhanced patient therapy outcomes and risk management.

Solution:

3D, virtual environment where students guide their avatar and interact with virtual patients to practice the proper decision- making protocol to determine if the patients are physically and mentally prepared for dental implant procedures. If surgery is required the student then practices the procedure in a safe, realistic environment.

Powered by BreakAway’s Pulse!! technology, the Dental Implant Training Simulation provides an engaging, distributable, game-based learning environment where students interact with patients in a 3D, virtual dentist office.

Virtual Clinical Learning Lab for Health Care Training

Pulse!! is the first ever, immersive virtual learning space for training health care professionals in clinical skills. Cutting-edge graphics recreate a lifelike, interactive, virtual environment in which civilian and military heath care professionals practice clinical skills in order to better respond to injuries sustained during catastrophic incidents, such as combat or bioterrorism.

Pulse!! is being developed in partnership with Texas A & M University - Corpus Christi and is funded from a federal grant from the Department of the Navy's Office of Naval Research.

Address the shortage of expert-level health care educators and respond to the changes in learning styles of current and future generations of students by embedding the clinical health care curriculum into an engaging, realistic simulation to create a wholly immersive virtual training environment.

Highly interactive and detailed 3D world with accurate physiology models. Fluid dynamics used to simulate blood flow in the human body.

Pediatric Pain Management

Free Dive is a virtual reality-based, 3D undersea exploration adventure that invites players to swim with sea turtles and tropical fish as they hunt for hidden treasure.

Designed to distract children who undergo frequent and often painful medical procedures. In conjunction with the medical researchers at University of Maryland Medical Center and the non-profit foundation Believe in Tomorrow, BreakAway proved the therapeutic power of games-the study showed that children better tolerated painful medical procedures while engaged with Free Dive.

Objective:

Create an engaging and fun virtual reality environment that effectively distracts children while they undergo frequent and often painful medical procedures – and bring joy to chronically ill children.

Solution:

A rich undersea exploration adventure that enables children to swim with sea turtles and tropical fish while they search for hidden treasure.

The lessons learned by playing the simulation fed directly into the practices of setting up an incident command structure. I encourage every one to use Incident Commander as a resource in case the unthinkable happens.
